Backpacks are the modern version of knapsacks. Backpacks are often used by students as a means to carry their books, travelers who do not want to be carrying large suitcases, outdoor sports enthusiasts who use it to carry their vital tools and apparel, and urban dwellers for mobility and easy access.

There are four classifications of backpacks and they are:

  • body backpack
  • internal frame backpack
  • external frame backpack
  • frameless backpack

These categories of backpacks are engineered with certain specifications and materials to provide end users with what they want and need. Most backpacks are made of special reinforced plastics synthetic polymers, aluminum and lightweight metal alloy.

At InTouch, some of the standards and procedures we take into account when creating backpack inspection procedures include:

ASTM F2153 - 07
The American Society for Testing and Materials developed the test method for the measurement of backpack capacity. Backpacks included in this standard are lumber backpacks, internal and external frame backpacks, and travel backpacks.

ASTM WK19130
The American Society for Testing and Materials developed the ASTM WK19130 specification for lead content in PVC plastics used in children’s backpacks.

ASTM E1501 - 99
The American Society for Testing and Materials developed the standard for nighttime photometric performance of retro-reflective markings on backpacks. This test standard addresses the visibility from viewpoints around backpacks manufactured with retro-reflective markings.

ISO 10047:1993
The ISO developed the test method for the determination of surface burning time of fabrics used in luggage. This particular test method is used on fabrics that have a raised fibre surface, such as napped, pile, tufted, flocked surfaces.

AATCC 30-2004
The American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists developed the AATCC 30-2004 test method for mildew and rot resistance of textile materials used during the production of backpacks.
