Fiberglass insulation inspection and quality control specialists divide fiberglass insulation into three categories when creating an inspection procedure. The first category is electrical (Type E). This electrical fiberglass insulation is used as electrical insulation tape. Another category is chemical fiberglass insulation (Type C) , which has superior acid resistance. The final category for fiberglass insulation is thermal insulation (Type T), which is used in walls, and attics in residential and commercial buildings.

These are just a few of the quality control tests performed to meet international standards when manufacturing and importing/exporting fiberglass insulation in China.

ASTM Quality Control Tests

  • Thermal Resistance
  • Combustion Characteristics
  • Critical Radiant Flux
  • Moisture Absorption, Odor Emission,Corrosiveness and Loss on Ignition
  • Odor Emission
  • Thermal Resistance
  • Surface Burning
  • Critical Radiant Flux
  • Water Vapor Performance
  • Thermal Resistance
  • Odor Emission
  • Fungi Resistance
  • Test Method: Water Vapor Absorption

STC Sound Control Tests

  • STC Rating -- Batts
  • STC Rating - Perfect Fill
  • STC Rating – Ultra Fit DS
  • STC Rating - Metal Stud Walls

Fiberglass insulation is made up of ingredients such as limestone, soda ash, feldspar, nepheline syenite and silica sand. Silica sand is generally used as the glass former in fiberglass. Limestone and Soda ash are used to assist lower the melting temperature. The raw materials used for fiberglass must be carefully weighed in exact quantities and mixed together before being melted into glass.

During the manufacturing of fiberglass insulation, the materials are sampled at various steps in the manufacturing process to maintain quality. A few of these steps that will be sampled include: the mixed raw material batch being fed into the melter, glass fiber leaving the fiberizer machine; and the final cured fiberglass insulation product emerging from the end of the production line. Fiberglass insulation manufacturers follow several ASTM testing procedures to adjust, measure and optimize the product, sound barrier performance and sound absorption. The physical properties are controlled by adjusting such manufacturing variables as binder content, bulk density, fiber diameter and thickness.
